The Berlin Foundation for Dermatology (BFD) is a tax-exempted organisation officially recognised as a charitable trust by German public law. In 2009 the Foundation celebrates its 10th Anniversary, looking back to a series of years of successful promotional work for Dermatology.
Its founding goes back to the memorable 17th World Congress of Dermatology organised in Berlin by G.Stüttgen and C.E.Orfanos, Professors at the Free University of Berlin. This event, the second of its magnitude in Dermatology after the II.World War on German soil, had an overwhelming scientific and social success. It became a highlight for over 7000 participants from 93 countries and strengthened the position and high standing of German Dermatology on a broad international level.

In addition, the organisers were able not only to renounce the congressional support offered by the Berlin Senate, but also to generate a respectable amount of funds. As early as at the beginning of the 90ies these financial resources were reserved for promoting dermatological research in Germany and common efforts were undertaken in cooperation with the German Dermatological Society for constituting a trust and realise this aim. After some unsuccessful attempts the concept of establishing a foundation designed to serve research on skin, international scientific exchange and continuing education in German institutions was accepted by the state authorities in Berlin, while a part of the overall funds remained at the Free University. An additional contribution was sponsored by Schering AG, Berlin.
Thus, the BERLIN FOUNDATION for DERMATOLOGY (BFD) was officially established as a charitable trust in 1999 equipped with 1.2 million DM, with 1.0 million DM (an approximate sum of over 50,0000 Euro ) as the authorised capital, while the surplus together with the annual interest were to serve the objectives as defined by the bylaws. The Foundation had its first seat at the Department of Dermatology, Campus Benjamin Franklin of the Free University, after 2004 the head office and management were transferred to the Dresdner Bank, as an experienced institution to promote its charitable function. Recently, a separate authorised donation ("Zustiftung") amounting over 60000 Euro was received by the BFD, specified to support dermatological services and education in developing African countries.
